Merry Christmas

As I sit and write this blog, I am amazed at the fact that I have my air on and it’s December 23rd.? This is just one of the many reasons I love living in South Carolina, even though my husband would prefer it be 20 degrees.? In less than 48 hours all the hustle and bustle, hoopla, standing in long lines and sitting in traffic will all have payed off and then you’ll have 365 days to get ready to do it again.? I find myself on en emotional roller coaster this holiday season-I’m excited because I am able to watch the excitement and anticipation through the eyes of my 16 month old granddaughter and what a blessing this is.? At the same time, I’m saddened because it will be my first Christmas without my Mom, she lost her battle to cancer in May and this was one of her favorite holidays and she loved the trees and the lights.? I’m certain she’s got her own special room in that great mansion all decked out and shining brighter that ever!

I had the honor to work with the Elgin Police Department Toys Roundup and Caring Hands again this year and this group-Chief Brown, Mrs. Cathy, Renee Wilson, Derek Turner, Theresa Hanley, Keri Todd, Emily Emmons and the officers-did a great job of bringing Christmas to some 46 families and 100 children.? Each year it seems to grow, but go smoother and to see those smiles is worth more than the weight of gold.? I am proud of our Police Department and the fact that it’s not just a job to them, it’s about making a positive difference in the community.? If you see one, please take the time to thank them-they go above and beyond in their service to the Town of Elgin and you would not find a finer group anywhere else even if you tried.

God Bless each and everyone and it is my wish that you find your piece of heaven right here on earth.? Enjoy this time with your loved one and I wish for you safe travels as you are out and about.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,

Elgin Christmas Tree Lighting-Dec. 8, 2011 @ 7:00 at Town Hall

What a great day we had for the Catfish Stomp! This year’s event was wonderful and I’m certain a good time was had by all. I would like to thank George and Angie Marthers and the many volunteers who gave of their time to organize and pull off this years Stomp and I’m already looking forward to next year.
I would like to invite everyone to the Elgin Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony which will be held this coming Thursday, December 8th @ 7:00 at the Elgin Town Hall. I know there are many events going on that night, but I hope you’ll be able to join us and help us celebrate the holiday season in our community and listen to a wonderful message and join in some singing.

36th Annual Elgin Catfish Stomp

It’s that time of year again, now that the holiday season is in full swing, the parade season kicks off this weekend.? The 36th Annual Elgin Catfish Stomp starts on Thursday with the Carnival opening and Friday night will be the Catfish Stomp Pagaent and Saturday will be the parade.? There are many other activities planned and Saturday will have a full schedule w/the parade starting @ 10:00, live entertainment, vendors, car show and of course, catfish stew and friend catfish-all located at the corner of Green Hill Rd. and Hwy. #1, behind Jimmy’s Mart.? I look forward to seeing everyone and I hope you and your loved ones have a blessed holiday season.

The Holiday Season is Here

It’s that time of year again, we will gather with our families next week to feast and enjoy Thanksgiving.? I always look forward to this time of year because I love spending time with my family and getting to see those that come to visit.? I wish everyone safe travels as they go to be with their loved ones and hope you enjoy your time with them.? I’m sure you’re all waiting patiently for the sales for Black Friday-I encourage you as you go out to make your purchases and take the time to enjoy a meal between your outings, to do as much as you can locally.? Please remember to support our local businesses as much as possible!? Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays to each of you and Go Gamecocks!!

Rest in Peace Mrs. Mamie

On behalf of myself and the Town of Elgin, I would like to extend my sympathy to the family of Mamie Pierce.? For those of you who did not have the opportunity to know this woman, I am sorry, for there will never be another like her.? I was fortunate to grow up around her and learned very quickly that she was one tough cookie.? She had a heart of gold and a smile that could melt the?snow off a mountaintop-she loved all that took the time to get to know her.? She and her husband, Mr. Curtis, have left lasting prints on the Town of Elgin-they were the perfect examples of how to love and serve your community!? This graceful woman loved her family and loved life and lived it to the fullest.? I thank you?Mrs. Mamie for all that you have taught myself and so many? and may God bless your family as they face tomorrow without you.? Heaven has a new angel and I have no doubt she’s already telling them how it needs to be done-we will miss you?Mamie Lou, but will never forget you!

Blaney Elementary School

The kids at Blaney Elementary School need your help to win a Power a Bright Future Grant that will be used to install a half mile walking path with 8-10 workout stations.? Voting begins today and runs until December-it’s simple, you can vote online by logging onto www.powerabrightfuture.com, search for Blaney Elementary School, vote one time every day and spread the word.? Please join me as I take a moment out of each day to cast a vote that will help our kids by winning a Power A Bright Future Grant from Clorox.

What a Week

This has been one of those weeks that I’m thankful to see come to an end and I welcome the weekend with open arms.? I was reminded this week through several situations that life is never a certainity, it is a wonderful gift and one that we should never take for granted.? Take a moment and let your family and loved ones know how much you love and appreciate them because we never know when our maker will be calling us home.

Enjoyed an insightful meeting tonight about our upcoming “Catfish Stomp Festival”.? The organizers have a wonderful event planned and some new events this year along with our normal customary ones.? One that I am looking forward to and would like to encourage others to think about participating in is the “Cookoff” that will take place on Saturday, December 3rd.? This is going to be a great opportunity for those great cooks out there to compete with fried or stewed catfish to see who is the king when it comes to preparing catfish.? If interested, stop by Elgin Town Hall and pick up an information/Entry form and let’s put that great recipe to the test!? I will talk more about this event as the time draws near.? I am just tickled to death about all that is in store for this event and I’m thinking that this has the chance of going down in history as on of the best!

Have a great weekend, spend time with you loved ones-I myself will be enjoying all that North Myrtle Beach has to offer and my family and I will be taking a much needed getaway.

God Bless,

A New Direction For Elgin

This is all new territory for me as I’m sure it will be for many others.? My youngest daughter was impressed that I am using new programs and trying new things such as blogging.? I’m sure I will bore someone to death, but I hope I can make just one person’s day by saying something witty.? I promise not to be long winded and will stick to topics that are of interest to most.? My topic today is volunteering and serving.? We have several positions available for our Planning and Zoning Commission and Zoning Appeals Board.? I’m hoping there’s someone reading this that may want to do a little research and check to see if this is something they might enjoy.? If so, please do not desitate to let me or the Mayor or other Council Members know and we will fix you up.? I encourage everyone to get informed and when the opportunity is there, get involved.? I’ve taken up enough of your time tonight-hope you’ll come again tomorrow.? Let’s talk Elgin up and start some shaking and some moving and see what happens next.
